To Publish or to Perish?

Darwin NewsA publisher has urged me, in no uncertain terms, to take down the extracts from Looking for Darwin that I had posted. I admit that it is a difficult issue. Obviously by posting contents that I intend to publish in printed form later, it could be construed that I have “devalued” them somewhat by putting them on the internet beforehand for all the world to see. Also, the publisher worried that others might steal my words. And while that may well be the sincerest form of flattery, in my view someone would have to be pretty desperate to do that. By posting the extracts, it was my intention to generate interest in Looking for Darwin and to provide a taster of what was to come in the actual text. Nevertheless, I am beholden to the likes of this publisher to ensure that Looking for Darwin appears in print, and so, for the time being at least, I will not post extracts as such, but will use this site to document the process of writing the book and to post relevant news stories and commentaries relating to Darwin.
This site is being re-organized so that information about various aspects of Darwin is more easily accessible. There will be new categories dealing with his early years, the voyage of the Beagle, and issues with his theory.Tags:Looking for Darwin, Charles Darwin, Evolution, Theory of Evolution, Publisher
